Top 10 Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in 2010. It’s a fun way for bloggers all over the Internet to connect and post the things they love about books. Today I’m going to explore all things bookish that I want to quit. This will include series I have quit, authors I have quit, habits I have quit, and everything bookish in between. I apologize now for the random assortment of thoughts this post will be.
1. James Patterson
This may be unpopular, but I really don’t like James Patterson. I read his “Witch and Wizard” series when I was in middle school, and even then I wasn’t impressed. His books are full of grammar mistakes and poorly devised plot lines. I may have judged him preemptively, but I hold the belief that if I didn’t like it in middle school, I probably never will.
2. House of Night Series
Were these ever going to end? Like ever? There were like nine of them before I decided I was done.
3. Pretty Little Liars
^Ditto.
4. Reading without a bookmark
I used to do what every book lover swears they have never done — dog-ear pages. I know, I know, I’m the worst. BUT I just invested in a really great bookmark that I use all the time. It makes me and my books a much happier person.
5. Reading more than one book at a time
I kid you not, I used to read 3 books at the same time. I would rotate between books and read one chapter and then read another book and then read another book’s chapter. My friend recently told me he would disown me if I did this now. Thankfully, I dropped that habit awhile ago.
6. Reading the same author too much in a row
I find that if I read the same author in a row a bunch of times I get really bored because the characters are always named similarly and they always live in similarly named towns and it just becomes too much of the same thing.
7. Young adult novels
This is one I haven’t quite yet quit, but I feel like I should sometime soon. I’m well into adult life (or at least in my mind I am) and I get strange looks when I wander into the Young Adult section at Barnes and Noble, but I just can’t seem to quit it. I think the stories are interesting, maybe not the most well written, but definitely interesting to my mind. Maybe one day I’ll quit this one, but for now I’m going to have to put up with the weird stares.
8. Comparing books to movies
They will never, ever be the same. And it’s high time I just accepted that fact and took them both at face value.
9. Judging people’s reading choices
Let people do what they want, say what they want, and read what they want. They aren’t judging you, so why should you judge them?
10. Being ashamed for my reading choices
I used to hide the fact that I read Nicholas Spark’s novels or take the jacket off my young adult novels. Why? That’s a great question. I’ve decided to take pride in what I read and have no shame.
What are some book things you want to quit? Leave a comment below.
Happy reading,
Kimberly

Joey @ thoughts and afterthoughts
I always leaned towards stopping at chapters so it was easier to remember the number rather than dog-earring haha. But in terms of reading YA as an adult–what is adulting even!?
Cheers,
Joey via. thoughts and afterthoughts.

There’s a whole book on adulting that I will be reading soon!

I know right! The House of night series were going on and on forever.

I definitely collect bookmarks when I travel- they protect my page corners, are relatively cheap, and people ask me about them all the time 🙂 I will admit to reading multiple books at a time, but it’s typically a fiction and a non-fiction book- I need options! Ditto on the reading too many works by the same author in a short period of time. I find that everything I enjoy slowly becomes annoying if I do! Wonderful list 🙂

Thanks! I think I may start a bookmark collection. There’s so many fun things you could do!

I don’t like James Patterson either. I really don’t understand what people see in his books.

I should quit collecting bookmarks–but I won’t. I also refuse to quit reading YA, because a lot of it is very good. Why deprive yourself? I still read multiple books at once. Not on a chapter by chapter basis, but I may pick one up, read some, decide I’m not feeling it, and move on. Or if I have a large hardback I’m reading, and I’m headed out on errands, I’ll pick up something smaller to lug around in my purse to read in line. Other people have called it a terrible habit, too. Ah, well.

I do the same thing. I bring books everywhere I go because I can’t stand to wait without some form of entertainment.

It’s amazing how much reading you can get done with five minutes here and there, too.

Pretty little liars… sigh. I liked it so much at the beginning but it devolved really, really quickly lol

I feel the exact same way!
