Top 10 Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in 2010. It’s a fun way for bloggers all over the Internet to connect and post the things they love about books. Halloween is coming up, and we all know what that means! Breaking out your favorite Halloween read to get you in the mood for the holiday. Here’s my top 10 list of scary books for the season.
1. Dark Places by Gillian Flynn
This is one of the creepier books I have read in my adult life. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire read, and even though it’s not specifically a Halloween book, I think everyone can get an eerie vibe from it.
2. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
I recommend this book specifically for it’s amazing Halloween scene with the troll.
3. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
If you haven’t read this classic yet, it is perfect for the season. It’s pretty easy to follow along, and it’s extremely well written. I think every Halloween lover should drive into this book.
4. World War Z by Max Brooks
This is the perfect zombie book for the dystopian-Halloween lover. Brooks’ writing style is absolutely captivating, and the ending has an amazing punch that will leave readers with a gaping mouth.
5. Twilight by Stephenie Meyers
I mostly threw this in for giggles, but I do love to read Twilight every once in a while. Even though the vampires are comically glittery and it’s mostly a love story, I still think it’s a good book to cuddle up with on a windy, Halloween night.
6. The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins
I’ve mentioned this before, but this is my favorite short story, and it’s probably the creepiest I’ve ever read. If you’re interested in mental illness and looking for a short read, I would consider Perkins’ work.
7. Beloved by Toni Morison
Also not a Halloween specific read, but as I’ve mentioned previously, still an eerie read involving a family and a not so ordinary visitor.
8. Edgar Allen Poe
Anything. Seriously. His stuff is amazing as well as completely terrifying.
9. Coraline by Neil Gaiman
If you’re looking for a book to creep you out in every sense of the word, Coraline is it. I was definitely not prepared to read this book in fourth grade, and I’m not prepared for it now. She enters an entirely new world where everyone has buttons for eyes!
10. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown by Charles Schulz
It’s a classic. And if you don’t want to curl up with the book, at least watch the movie. I know that’s what I’ll be doing!
Leave me a comment below about your favorite Halloween read!
Happy reading,
Kimberly

I thought of Coraline, but I didn’t want to fill my list with Gaiman. 🙂 Another good zombie book–The Girl with all The Gifts. Nicely disturbing.
