Catching My Eye,  Personal

Catching My Eye | 7.19.19

I don’t know about you, but I’m excited to sleep this weekend! This week ended up being surprising busy, and I didn’t get nearly enough shut-eye — even with skipping a few workouts. The most exciting part of my week was probably mounting my TV. My friend came over to do it for me — my handy skills do not include the use of power tools — and we had all sorts of problems finding the studs and situating the TV at the right height. All in all, it took about four hours with a little dinner break, but now my TV is nice and sturdy (cross my fingers) on my wall, and I’m watching it as I type this. This weekend is going to be a little busier than I would have liked, but it’s all good things like time with friends and fun workouts. Let’s get into what’s been catching my eye this week, it’s a little more than usual…

catching my eye

1. This guy who is writing one children’s story every day
I thought this story about this full-time dad and working parent was super cute. He’s writing a children’s story every day — the challenge was inspired by his daughter, but he pulls inspiration from everything around him. It’s his way of keeping the creative juices flowing, and it’s such a fun challenge.

2. This article explaining food expiration dates
Having just thrown out more food than I would like to admit because of the move, I found this handy-dandy article super helpful. I probably knew the difference between best-by and sell-by deep down, but it’s nice to have the reassurance from this article.

3. These faux-leather leggings
I’ve had these on my list to buy for years. They’re such a staple, and I’ve always wanted to try them out. With the Nordstrom sale opening up to the public soon, I actually might snag a pair this time…

4. This feature on Ariana Grande
While I do love her recent album, I’m not an avid fan of Ariana Grande (I’m not really an avid fan of anyone?), but I found this piece inspirational. There’s no doubt about the fact that Ariana is incredibly talented, but she’s also smart as a whip and strong as a bull. Whatever your thoughts on her fashion choices or dating history, you can’t deny the fact that when it comes down to it, she’s an incredible role model that can teach anyone about strength and dignity.

5. These productivity tips
I’ve been finding myself slumping over in my seat more and more lately, and these productivity tips were just what I needed to boost myself up. My favorite tip is about scheduling, and I think I’m going to incorporate more goal setting into my daily habits.

6. The final book in the Ember in the Ashes series
It’s been about a year since I read A Torch in the Nightso sifting back into Tahir’s world is harder than I anticipated. In A Reaper at the GatesLaia is fighting against every evil facing the Empire including the boy she loves best friend. It’s one of the only young-adult dystopian novels I’ve enjoyed lately, and I’m looking forward to digging a little deeper this weekend.

7. This s’mores recipe
Summer is the perfect time for s’mores! While I do have a fireplace in my new apartment (weird, I know), I’m not comfortable using it for roasting marshmallows. These s’mores blondies will have to do the trick until I can swing by a bonfire.

8. This list of clean sunscreens
Summer is upon us! I’ve been looking to get cleaner and greener with my skincare and makeup (aluminum-free deodorant, here I come!), and sunscreen seems like it could be a good start. I finally started wearing sunscreen regularly (thank you, adulthood), so I found this list of clean sunscreens pretty helpful.

9. This piece from Stephen King from his experience getting hit by a car
I’ve recently started reading Stephen’s King novels, but I found this short-story about his run in with a car really insightful.

10. This article on why therapy is important at all times
It may not be mental health month anymore, but mental health is always important. I haven’t been to therapy in years, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think it’s important. I like how this article talks about how it’s important to go to therapy in good times and bad.

Happy adventuring,
Kimberly
