    Eleanor & Park: A Review

Title: Eleanor & Park Author: Rainbow Rowell Genre: Young Adult Fiction Quotation: “But it’s up to us …’ he said softly. ‘It’s up to us not to lose this.” Would recommend to: anyone who likes John Green novels and out-of-the-box characters. Eleanor & Park features your atypical love story — an overweight, redheaded girl and a skinny Asian boy. Due to its uncharacteristic characters, author Rainbow Rowell has received a lot of questions about Eleanor’s weight and Park’s ethnicity. She is acclaimed for stepping out-of-the-box and presenting an interesting, different love story for young adults. Apart from their unconventional physical appearances, Eleanor and Park stand out for other reasons such as Eleanor’s abusive household and…

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest:A Review

Title: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Author: Ken Kesey Genre: Fiction Quotation: “Never before did I realize that mental illness could have the aspect of power, power. Think of it: perhaps the more insane a man is, the more powerful he could become.” Would recommend to: anyone that loves a classic or is interested in mental health. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is an entrancing novel about the conditions of mental hospitals during the 1960s. Kesey’s novel incorporates complex themes that challenge traditional thinking about mental health, democracy and the treatment of the “insane”. The novel is narrated from Chief Bromden’s perspective. A patient who has been on the ward longer than anyone…

    The Book Thief: A Review

Title: The Book Thief Author: Markus Zusak Genre: Young Adult Fiction Quotation: “I have hated words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right.” Would recommend to: anyone. I know, I know. I finally read “The Book Thief.” And here’s what I think: 1. Death is compassionate. If you don’t already know, this book is told from the perspective of Death during World War II. It’s an interesting stance to take during a time when death was so prevalent. It made the war that much more heartbreaking. I loved this perspective because it’s something you can never truly know but can only imagine – and that’s what books are for.…

The Museum of Intangible Things: A Review

Title: The Museum of Intangible Things Author: Wendy Wunder Genre: Young Adult Fiction Quotation: “It’s liberating, energizing, and thrilling to step outside all of the rules of decorum and exist in a place I’ve never dared to inhabit.” Would recommend to: anyone that has ever known anyone who has wanted to escape who they are. This was another one of those young-adult books that didn’t turn out the way I expected it. And I kind of liked it. Here’s a basic outline of the book: These two girls have been best friends since childhood and they know exactly how the other one ticks. They have been through more than any normal 18 year-old friendship has…

We All Worry About the Bell Jar

Title: The Bell Jar Author: Sylvia Plath Genre: Autobiographical Fiction Quotation: “I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest…” Would recommend to: someone needing to be reminded that they are not alone. (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61XpVj1wRHL.jpg) WARNING: (If you don’t already know this…) Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar” is a semi-autobiographical piece of work that talks about her struggle with depression throughout her early adult life. I read “The Bell Jar” at a time in my life very similar to the main character, Esther. I had just moved to a new city (for the summer), was alone (I had no friends) and was working full-time (I had…
