    Eleanor & Park: A Review

Title: Eleanor & Park Author: Rainbow Rowell Genre: Young Adult Fiction Quotation: “But it’s up to us …’ he said softly. ‘It’s up to us not to lose this.” Would recommend to: anyone who likes John Green novels and out-of-the-box characters. Eleanor & Park features your atypical love story — an overweight, redheaded girl and a skinny Asian boy. Due to its uncharacteristic characters, author Rainbow Rowell has received a lot of questions about Eleanor’s weight and Park’s ethnicity. She is acclaimed for stepping out-of-the-box and presenting an interesting, different love story for young adults. Apart from their unconventional physical appearances, Eleanor and Park stand out for other reasons such as Eleanor’s abusive household and…

    Code Name Verity: A Review

Title: Code Name Verity Author: Elizabeth Wein Genre: Young Adult Historical Fiction Quotation: “It’s like being in love, discovering your best friend.” Would recommend to: any history fan that loves a good twist. The title, much like the book, is allusive in nature but focuses on the book much more than readers will originally believe. Code Name Verity, written by Elizabeth Wein, is an intricate story about relationships between people that evolves around codes, names, and “Verity,” known by many names, but I shall call her Queenie. The title, much like the novel, is something readers won’t fully understand unless they give it a second read. All aspects of this novel are doubled-sided —…

    Treasure Tuesday

    1. I am currently reading “Code Name Verity.” So far, it’s an amazing historical fiction YA novel that I definitely recommend to anyone interested in either of those genres. 2. If you didn’t know, I am in a sorority at college and last night I got my little(s?)!!! I am so excited and ready to make the week an amazing one! 3. 4. Here’s a list from Buzzfeed of the top YA books to read this spring. I’m looking forward to reading #4, #6, and #13. They all look amazing though. 5. I am the Editor-in-Chief of my yearbook, and this past week I was featured on my school’s new…

Top 10 Tuesday: Leaving My Comfort Zone

Top 10 Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in 2010. It combines what I love most in this world into one—lists, books, and blogging. It couldn’t be any better suited for me! This week is dedicated to the best books I’ve read recently that were completely out of my comfort zone. As you may or may not know, I read a lot of young adult fiction, but in 2015, I tried to challenge myself by reading books that were completely different. Let’s see which ones were my favorites… 1. Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie I loved this children’s tale from the moment I opened its cover. It’s such…

    The Book Thief: A Review

Title: The Book Thief Author: Markus Zusak Genre: Young Adult Fiction Quotation: “I have hated words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right.” Would recommend to: anyone. I know, I know. I finally read “The Book Thief.” And here’s what I think: 1. Death is compassionate. If you don’t already know, this book is told from the perspective of Death during World War II. It’s an interesting stance to take during a time when death was so prevalent. It made the war that much more heartbreaking. I loved this perspective because it’s something you can never truly know but can only imagine – and that’s what books are for.…

Top 5 Wednesday: Reading by the Fire

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! That means curling up next to the fire (whether it be real or digital) with the best books and passing the time in the only acceptable way before the craziness of the holidays. This week is dedicated to those books that are perfect for reading on a cold, winter day. 1. The Favorite This is the most acceptable time to pick up that book people are always surprised you are re-reading. It’s your favorite. The one with the dog-eared pages, crinkled spine, and well-worn cover. You’ve read it so many times, you know it by heart. Yet you still love it and…

The Museum of Intangible Things: A Review

Title: The Museum of Intangible Things Author: Wendy Wunder Genre: Young Adult Fiction Quotation: “It’s liberating, energizing, and thrilling to step outside all of the rules of decorum and exist in a place I’ve never dared to inhabit.” Would recommend to: anyone that has ever known anyone who has wanted to escape who they are. This was another one of those young-adult books that didn’t turn out the way I expected it. And I kind of liked it. Here’s a basic outline of the book: These two girls have been best friends since childhood and they know exactly how the other one ticks. They have been through more than any normal 18 year-old friendship has…

All the Bright Places : A Review

Title: All the Bright Places Author: Jennifer Niven Genre: Young Adult Non-Fiction Quotation:“The great thing about this life of ours is that you can be someone different to everybody.” Would recommend to: anyone who has previously given up on young adult novels but wants to try again. (As you can see, I bought this book from Target. It was a great purchase at a great price!) I was pleasantly surprised (and also emotionally destroyed) by Jennifer Niven’s book. Here are my initial thoughts upon completion: 1. Well that was fast. The story takes off from the moment you crack the cover — and I LOVED it. There was no waiting around for the story…

    Treasure Tuesday

I am currently (finally) reading “All the Bright Places” by Jennifer Niven. 2.  3. Here’s a list of young adult novels brought to you by the one and only Buzzfeed. It promises to diversify your bookshelf. I’ll definitely be adding these to my list! 4. My roommate showed me this awesome post about gifts for grammar nerds. Check it out. I’ll definitely be asking for #1 for my birthday. 5.  I really want this coloring book! Happy reading, Kimberly

    Opinions May Vary

Title: Side Effects May Vary Author: Julie Murphy Genre: Young Adult Fiction Quotation: “I don’t want the easy kind of love. I wanted the crazy love, the kind of love that created and destroyed all at the same time.” Would recommend to: people who appreciate a different story. This was my “young adult” choice of the past month, and I don’t have any regrets. The book chronicles a girl’s life before and after she found out she was cancer free. You follow her through her acceptance of her cancer, how she copes with the news that her life may be coming to an end, and finally how all of her actions have shaped her life…
