Catching My Eye,  Personal

Catching My Eye | 9.20.19

What a week! These last few days have been a whirlwind of emotion, but for very good reasons! I can’t share the good news quite yet, but big things are going on!

Something I’ve touched on a few times on here but never really delved into is the importance of friendships. This past week has proven to me more than ever how important it is to surround yourself with people that lift you up and support you no matter what. They may ask some tough questions, but they are going to be by your side no matter what. Good friends are also just as thrilled for your success as you are thrilled for theirs. My friend shared a super sweet note to me on Instagram earlier in the week talking about women supporting women, and it’s more important than ever. “A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.”

Let’s get into what’s been catching my eye this week…

1. This article about embracing the stuff you’re bad at
I loved what this piece had to say about doing stuff you’re bad at. We tend to focus only on the things we are good at and grow our skills from there. Instead, why don’t we try something new? Even if we suck at it, it’s a new experience, right? I especially latched on to the part where the article talks about not needing to commodify our curiosity. Not everything needs to be side hustle – sometimes we can do things just for the simple joy of doing them.

2. This think-piece on how scrunchies made a comeback
I absolutely love scrunchies. They are my favorite accessory as I rarely leave home without one, and I think they can really punch up a look. I found this piece on nostalgic fashion very interesting, especially its take on how scrunchies remind people of their younger days. Fashion trends are so interesting to me, but I really hope low-rise jeans never make a comeback.

3. This adorable wrap dress
The wrap dress has made a fierce comeback, and I am not mad about it. I’m a huge fan of this mustard yellow, and I love the corduroy texture for fall.

4. This exposé on a famous Instagramer
I’ve never followed Caroline Calloway because I personally do not go on Instagram to read a book per caption, but I have a friend that does, so I found this piece fascinating. While I’m not totally on the friend’s side either, I think this almost outing of social media influencers and what life can really be like behind the scenes is so important for people to understand. It’s also interesting to think about how people used to do crazy things for their ten minutes of fame on TV and that role has almost completely switched to people doing whatever it takes to be Instagram/social media famous. This piece really made me take a step back and think about the world we live in.

5. This fictionalized account of the World’s Fair and H.H. Holmes
The Devil in the White City is a fictionalized account of what happened at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It was made possible by Daniel Burnham, the architect of the event, and it features H.H. Holmes, the famous serial killer that used the fair to lure his victims to their deaths at his Murder House. I’m actually reading this book for book club (tonight), but I’ve been wanting to read it for quite some time.

Happy adventuring,
Kimberly
