    August Reading Wrap-Up

I can’t believe August is already over! (Don’t I say that about every month?) I didn’t read nearly as much as I wanted to during August — not because I was traveling or hosting or anything in particular, I guess I was just doing other things (though I can’t really pinpoint what those “things” were). Despite not reading as much as I’d initially hoped, I still finished four books. Let’s get started! Image from Amazon

    Recommended Reading Per Class

It’s officially back-to-school season — I guess it’s been back-to-school-season, but I’m riding this wave as long as I can because this has always been my favorite unofficial season. I was the dork that always loved school, and I guess I still am. I decided to make a list of books I would require if I were to teach any of the following subjects. Let’s get started! Top 5 Books From Required Reading Lists

Even though I’ve always loved reading, getting through a required reading list in school was always a struggle for me. Typically, I always read the books, but some books were harder to get through than others. Some of my favorite required reading was actually in a introduction to literature class I took during my senior year of school. That’s where I read The Great Gatsby for the first time and fell in love with Beloved (two books I’ll talk about later in this post). Whether you’ve been an avid reader since you first learned, or reading has always been the bane of your existence, it’s always going to be a part of your life,…

5 Books From the Man Booker Prize Long List to Read

The Man Booker Prize Long List was announced July 23, 2018. The list was whittled down from 171 submissions — the most amount of titles ever submitted — to just 13 incredible works. The award is open to writers of any nationality with books written in English and published in the UK or Ireland (a recent addition after a rule change in 2018). I always love seeing these lists as they inspire me to read powerful, modern works, but I know it would be rare to read all the nominations. This week I’ve made me own Man Booker Prize Short List from these Long List nominations. Let’s get started!

Top 5 Science Fiction Books to Read

Science fiction is a genre that I absolutely love but, unfortunately, haven’t been able to read that much of. From the greats like H.G. Wells to Ernest Cline, this genre has so much to offer readers. Because of that, I decided to bring in an expert. This weeks post is brought to you by a repeat guest author, Ryan Finn. Let’s get started! There are many different sub-genres of science fiction, including everything from dystopian to space operas to hard sci-fis; however, they all signal the same thing to me. Adventure, imagination, and exploring the reaches of what could be possible. I’ve loved reading expansive fiction since I was young,…

Top 4 Books to Read on July 4th

There’s no holiday like Independence Day. Everyone dons their red, white, and blue, fireworks light up the night sky, and you get to truly enjoy your freedom because (normally) you get a day off of work. I’ve had some pretty good July 4ths and some pretty awful July 4ths, but still, I try to enjoy the day by going to the beach or reading a good book. This year I decided to compile a list of the perfect books to read on this momentous day. Let’s get started! Image from Amazon

    July TBR List

It’s that time of the month again! Since I started creating to-be-read lists, I have been reading more and more. Sometimes I sway from the list, but all-in-all, my reading has never been any better. I’ve read more in the last two months that I did January through March. That being said, I did forgo some of the books on my May and June list, so I’m keeping my July list short in hopes that I can get to those books too. Let’s get started with what I hope to be reading this coming month! Image from Amazon 1. Sweet Forgiveness by Lori Nelson Spielman My mother gave me Sweet Forgiveness years…

Top 5 Books of 2018 (So Far!)

I’ve read over 20 books so far in 2018, and I am jazzed! With a goal of 50 for the year, I feel like I’m at a pretty good pace to hit, and possibly surpass, that goal for the first time since I set it a few years ago. Setting monthly TBR (to-be-read) lists has been revolutionary in my reading practice. It takes the indecision out of picking the book I am going to read next, and it encourages me to really reach my goals. For the most part I’ve enjoyed the books I’ve read this year, but these stood out for one reason or the other. Let’s get started!…

Top 5 Books To Give Dad for Father’s Day

Father’s Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate Dad than by giving him an adventure of a lifetime. I truly think there is nothing better than giving a book as a gift. Today I’ve got five books you can give your dad for Father’s Day that are sure to make him feel special. Let’s get started! Image from Amazon 1. “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien What better book to give Dad than a classic adventure tale? “The Hobbit” is one of my favorite books because of the simple joy it encapsulates. Bilbo, a hobbit who has never know fun and friendship, is invited to go…
